Posed vs Lifestyle Newborn Photography

Trying to decide which type of newborn session is best for you? As a photographer, I have done both and I can tell you from my perspective some of the pros and cons! These factors are all things I considered when deciding which style was best for Easley Life Photography! That being said, I ultimately decided on Posed Newborn Photography so I am slightly biased!

Pros and Cons of a Posed newborn session:

What is a Posed newborn session? Posed newborn photography is the art of capturing perfectly curated moments. This type of session is about photographing your favorite newborn details. Posed sessions take place in a photography studio where the photographer poses you and your baby in a variety of poses, with props, backdrops, and outfits. These sessions require highly trained professionals who understand how to safely pose and monitor babies.

Pros:

  1. You dont have to clean your house (Hello!!).

  2. Heated studio set perfect for a sleeping baby.

  3. Professional lighting

  4. Studio stocked with everything needed to capture your sweet baby! (backdrops, buckets, wraps, headbands, hats, & props)

  5. Most of the session is about the baby, within just the first 30 minutes or so for family portraits

Cons:

  1. You have to leave your house with a newborn.

Thats all I can think of…but leaving your house with a new baby can be hard! I get it!

Pros and Cons of a Lifestyle newborn session:

What is a Lifestyle newborn session? Lifestyle newborn photography is the art of capturing the family bond. This type of session is about the family connection and captures you and your new baby in your home. The session usually includes photographing the nursery and the details you put into decorating it.

Pros:

  1. Session is done in the comfort of your home.

  2. Longer timeframe to do the session (up to 30 days).

  3. Baby does not need to be asleep.

  4. Get to capture all those details you put into the nursery.

Cons:

  1. Need to declutter/clean home.

  2. Requires bright sunny day for best natural light (or professional lighting).

  3. Limited options for baby only poses.

  4. Convincing husband to be photographed for an hour

  5. Family portriat will likely not be hung on the walls of a room it was photographed in (creates mirror affect).

  6. Not everyone’s home is the model home you see in the Pinterest inspiration pictures.

What did I learn?

In-home sessions came with challenges that could make or break a session. Nurseries are often too small for my professional lighting and the availability of natural light is often limited. Clients who just had a baby do not always have the time or energy to have a spotless house and I am often asked to edit out certain things out of the background. And never fails, clients would show me images from a posed session and request a specific pose….which requires additional equipment that is (in my opinion) too much to bring someone home.

Ultimately I learned that Posed newborn sessions were best for my business! I love that the studio gives me the ability to provide my clients with consistent quality images that can be done rain or shine.
