My photography journey began in the front seat of a Plymouth Acclaim, which ironically enough five years prior was almost my place of birth. The year was 1995 and for a brief moment, while my mom had run inside to grab something, I had been left alone. That’s when I saw it: a Kodak disposable camera. Before my mom returned, I quickly finished the roll of film by taking 4 photos.
The first photo I captured was of the dash of the car in all its glorious beige-ness. Next, was a snap of my legs and the bottom rim of the Michael Jordan basketball uniform that I frequently stole from my brother because it had my name on it.
The final two photos were my attempts at capturing what is arguably the first selfie. The first attempt was mostly the visor, give me a break there was no screen back then, but the second photo was straight up the nose with the sun highlighting my amazing bangs. My mom returned to the car and I put the camera back where I had found it.
What stands out about the memory the most is my mom’s shock and awe reaction to the developed film. At first, she was unsure who the culprit was, until the undeniable selfie.
To this day, I love to be with my clients when they see their photographs for the first time. That shock and awe reaction is something I strive for with my sessions. When you specialize in babies and family, most parents really are hoping for just one good picture. Unlike the disposable quality of my first photographs, however, my clients can expect a beautiful frame worthy gallery of high-quality images.
Those first 4 pictures are more than photographs. They are treasured memories of my childhood; my emotional connection to that ugly brown car, my favorite outfit, my curiosity of photography, and of course my amazing bangs. As your photographer, my goal and passion is to capture that emotional connection for you such as when your little one wraps their arms around your neck, or scrunches their nose when they laugh as you tickle them or when they leap into your arms because you’re always there to catch them. These are the timeless memories you will want to treasure and enjoy throughout your home.
