The arrival of a new baby is an exciting time. It can also be unpredictable and sometimes very early. Preterm birth is defined as a birth that is less than 37 weeks of gestation. Babies who are born early or have a low birth weight often have long term physical and developmental complications or delays. According to March of Dimes Research the National preterm birth rate is 9.6%. The preterm birth rate for Arkansas is 10.8%. This has increased from the year 2016 for Arkansas.How does the county you live in compare to other counties in Arkansas in terms of preterm births? The Grades are in so let’s take a look and see. These numbers are based on the counties 2014 preterm birth rates.

Let’s take a further look at the rate of live births in 2012-2014 that were preterm across Ethnicities/Races:Hispanic: 8.3%American Indian/Alaska Native: 9.3%Caucasian: 9.5%Asian/Pacific Islander: 9.7%African American: 13.7% What can we do?Preterm birth is unpredictable. Although it is unpredictable, there are some ways to help decrease the risk and prevent it. The Kappa Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., in Conway, Arkansas, with the support of March of Dimes, invite you to come and attend a Paradise Party Luau in honor of expecting moms, those who desire to become mommies, their families, and their support systems! This luau is free. Its aim is to create a warm, welcoming, family friendly, stress free environment for those who are expecting, those who desire to bring a new bundle of joy into the world, support systems, aunties, uncles, grandparents, friends for those who wish to gain more information about the prevention of preterm birth weight.
